Burnt Well Guest Ranch was the highlight of an amazing driving vacation around the US. My sister and I are from rural Australia, and chose a stay at Burnt Well because of the opportunity it afforded to experience a working cattle property. What we discovered at this beautiful, rugged New Mexico ranch exceeded all of our expectations. The beautiful landscape, comfortable and comforting accomodation and the range of athletic, steady quarter horses with sweet temperaments and sure-feet were incredible impressive. What really blew us away however, was the genuineness of the warm welcome offered by ranch owners Kim and Patricia Chesser and their family. The Chessers managed to make a four-day trip into a magic experience that will stay with us for life. While managing an extremely busy cattle property and household, the family embraces every visitor and grants you the privilege of honorary part-of-it-all for your stay. The easy-going Kim and his son Tye patiently and expertly enabled us to ride horses to our heart's desire while observing (and taking part where possible) in daily ranch work. We were absolutely stoked to take part in yarding about 40 heifers for preg testing and branding. Watching the incredible competent ranchers work with a vet wielding a sonogram wand, and being allowed to feel a calf in-utero was a very special, fascinating experience. Every day in the saddle was a learning opportunity, and Kim generously shared his knowledge of the land, the animal species and vegetation of the ranch and the challenges posed by weather and terrain throughout the year. He's also a pretty good history buff, and can answer most questions a visitor might have about Billy the Kid and other regional characters who star in the stories of the wild west. Underpinning all of this were the delicious lunches and suppers prepared by cook-extraordinaire, Patricia. The Burnt Well kitchen and cosy, commodious dining table is just about the nicest place you can imagine. Beautiful, hearty meals with a true south-western flavour and meat grown on the ranch meant everything tasted extra special. Evenings chatting with our hosts and fellow guests were relaxing and often hilarious. Burnt Well is the definition of 'feeling at home', and my sister and I weren't surprised to feel a little blue the day after leaving the ranch, reflecting on what a special place we'd just been lucky enough to experience. Australia's a long way away, but if we need an excuse to plan holiday number-two in America, then going back to Burnt Well is more than enough reason. What a privilege, and what a pleasure!
Burnt Well Ranch was a great experience from the food to horseback riding to cattle work to a cozy bed to sleep in. We will be bringing the kids back!
Vacation of a lifetime. Outstanding working cattle ranch experience. Great horses, intimate experience with the terrain, great hospitality, extremely knowledgeable, great conversation and great food! I highly recommend without reservation if this is what you are looking for.
Burnt Wells is great family fun, trailhorse riding ranch. The family owned business is very friendly and the horses are gentle and calm and know the trail. The scenery is amazing and picturesque. A wonderful time, thank you Kim, Ty and Tegan :)
We failed to take advantage of the available activities, but loved the quiet beauty of the NM desert. The Casita was adorable and so well thought out decorations were family heirlooms framed with notes from the owners/creators. We plan to go back and take advantage of all offered activities.
