This place saves lives. Very grateful for their work

My cousin was admitted to Sunrise for four or five days after attempting to commit suicide. I called to speak to the counselor to inform them how he has been struggling for a lifetime. His own brother called and spoke to them for a while . Even his wife called to speak to a counselor, left her name and number and neve recieved a return call. I learned shortly after my call and within 15 minutes they released him. He is no longer with us today.

My sister was admitted to this facility after her second episode due to metal illness. We were relieved that she was finally getting the help she needed however, we weren’t expecting the treatment us as caregivers and family members would receive. My father tried to contact my sister as well as myself and was told we would need a passcode. Luckily our local hospital informed us of this prior and allowed us to make one upon her admission. Our local hospital also helped us fill out what we thought were power of attorney papers with my sister’s signature. We gave Sunrise the passcode we initially set up and they advised us that was the wrong passcode. We faxed over the power of attorney paperwork and they indicated that it was the wrong power of attorney papers. Frustrated we were unable to get in touch with her. Luckily my sister reached out to us or we would have never heard from her during her stay. Living two hours away from the facility my dad tried to visit her during visitation hours. He was told that he was not allowed to visit her because she needed to fill out paperwork for visitation but also advised that she was not making sense and unable to relate full sentences. My father responded “How do you expect her to fill out a request form if she is obviously incoherent?” The argument ended with my father stating he would get a lawyer and the nurse advising him not to. The lawyer was able to take the matter before a judge immediately and ruled that my sister was incapable of making financial and medical decisions for herself and granted my father custody that same day. The next day we made the trip to Roswell to present the papers and attempt once again to see my sister. Two nurses in defense mode (arms crossed) came out into the hallway. I advised them we had custody paperwork and wanted the medication and analysis for my sister. They didn’t even glance at the paper work and told us we would have to talk to the administration Monday morning. I pleaded to visit my sister and what was such a hassle was the day before was a simple yes the next day. We were told that the family would be notified for her release when the time comes. However they never called the only reason I found out is when my sister called me thirty minutes before. I called to speak to the discharge nurse and told her no one notified us. She again pleaded that she needed the paper work that we tried to give them before!! I told her I could fax it over and she told me it wouldn’t do any good now. They simply dropped her on my dad’s door step. Reviewing the information on her discharge paperwork, we noticed errors in her indication of the incident, her family contact information was an old phone number my mom had years ago, as well as an error in her insurance provider information. All things the FAMILY could have correctly gave them if they would have cooperated. This facility handled the situation unprofessionally. I will do everything in my power to make sure another family does not go through what we endured, I will contact NAMI and inform them of how Family and caregivers of a person with a mental disorder is treated.
